A Winter’s stay at Majeka House, Stellenbosch

My visit to Majeka House is entirely the result of Instagram envy over a couple accounts I follow who were evidently invited to the hotel – I guess thats why they call them ‘influencers’. The subtle marketing was the reason it was the first placed I searched for when considering a weekend away. Anyone longing for some kind of escape and coming across the images of a chandelier-lit indoor pool room, would definitely feel some kind of inclination towards the place. And so thanks to booking.com, myself and boyfriend found ourselves there in the middle of a Wintery June.

Majeka House is just outside of Stellenbosch’s town centre, below the Hotontots-Holland Mountains and near Terroir and the Stellenbosch golf course. Surrounded by houses and smaller vineyards the hotel’s starke white exterior stands proudly with its bottle green awnings that match the the many young cypress trees dotted orderly around the grounds.



We were greeted immediately upon driving through the gates on a Friday evening. The concierge continued to be extremely welcoming and helpful throughout the stay, which started on a very good note once we were bumped up to the more superior Mountain View rooms. Upgrades are always very exciting for me, as they never happen. I’m still waiting to be ushered out of the economy queue and getting told I don’t belong there.

The mountain view room, like the other rooms at Majeka House, is really spacious and mixes contemporary accessories with ornate, classic furnishings that focus on bold colours and lush textures. The hotel in its entirety is sophisticated and tastefully opulent with noticeable attention to details like dropped down ceilings that have been uniquely painted to give each room a different theme. The mountain view room was the perfect mix of trend and timeless, with a four poster bed, wooden floors, a Gregor Jenkins brass accented coffee table and glass door leading into the bathroom.The room was totally styles and cosy, ideal for Winter, the only thing missing was the bathrobes.


Ornamental pigs are an integral part of the decor as well and serve as a symbol or mascot of the hotel. They pop up everywhere big and small, apparently because the owner Karina has had a slight obsession with them since childhood.


Karina, who is French, owns the hotel with her South African husband Lloyd, both of whom had a history in the hotel industry prior to the inception of Majeka House in 2008. Majeka House was in fact their family home up until 2010 when the expanding hotel forced them to find a new place to live. The growth of the hotel since 2008 now sits in the form of 23 rooms, a gym, indoor and outdoor pools, Makaron Restaurant and the M lounge and cocktail bar. Thats one hell of a big family home!

One of the highlights of the hotel is the indoor pool. Despite it being rather chilly, i was like a fish to water. I’m a firm believer in making use of facilities that you can’t enjoy at home, and a chandelier lit pull and jacuzzi is certainly not something I have the pleasure of dipping in everyday.



The breakfast was pretty perfect. Breakfast is taken in Makaron restaurant, and in the mornings the sun streams in, glistening off the brass topped tables. It’s a full continental with added South African touches, like local Cap Classique, and service provided for hot breakfast. I went for the omelette which was no doubt one of the best I’ve had. And subsequently tucked into some mini cinnamon wheels – basically don’t hold back at breakfast, it’s too good.



Majeka House is a place I would recommend to anyone looking for a peaceful, luxurious break. It’s near all the well-to-do wine farms and restaurants, but also feels totally removed from any bustle, as it sits cosily in it\s quiet suburb. The rooms, service and overall feel all succeeded in making the overall experience sufficiently lovely with just the right amount of indulgence. I really hope to go back during summer to experience the hotel in a different light.
